A mortice lock is worth repairing, not ripping out
The standard advice on an old lock is to replace the lot with something modern. That costs you the original brass, usually leaves a scar in the timber, and is rarely necessary.
Most mortice locks can be stripped, cleaned, re-pinned or re-levered and put back in the same mortice with the same escutcheon. Where a door genuinely needs modern security, we fit it so it reads as part of the house rather than bolted onto it.

Questions we get most weeks
Usually, yes. A lever or mortice lock can often be read and a key cut to it on the spot; failing that the lock comes off, gets decoded on the bench in the van, and goes back on the same day.
That is the whole point of doing it properly. Entry is by picking or bypass wherever possible, tools are padded, and on a painted period door we mask before anything touches the timber.
Honestly, often not — a warded lock is charming and not much of an obstacle. The usual answer is to keep it working as the handsome part of the door and add a discreet modern deadbolt where it will not be seen from the street.
More than a weekday afternoon, as it does everywhere. You will be told the number on the phone, including the callout, before anyone sets off.
